Plant-Based Meat Revolution: India's Vegan Food Market Hits $1 Billion

India's plant-based and vegan food market has crossed the $1 billion milestone in 2025, growing at 35% annually and far outpacing global growth rates. The sector, driven by health-conscious millennials and environmental awareness, has expanded from niche urban stores to mainstream supermarket shelves across tier-1 and tier-2 cities.

Market Leaders and Products

Homegrown brands like GoodDot, Blue Tribe, and Imagine Meats (co-founded by actor Genelia D'Souza) lead the market, collectively holding 65% share. GoodDot's plant-based chicken, priced at Rs 350 for 250 grams, has become a mainstream product available in over 50,000 retail outlets. Blue Tribe's vegan mutton keema, which uses pea protein and beetroot for color, has found particular success in states with high non-vegetarian consumption.

The dairy alternatives segment has seen even faster growth, with oat milk, almond milk, and cashew-based cheese becoming standard items in urban households. International brands like Oatly and Beyond Meat have entered the Indian market, but local brands maintain dominance through better pricing and flavors tailored to Indian palates.

"India's vegetarian tradition gives it a unique advantage in the plant-based revolution. Unlike Western markets where consumers are switching from meat, Indian companies are creating exciting new categories that appeal to both vegetarians and non-vegetarians," said food industry analyst Sameer Mehra.

The government's FSSAI has introduced a new labeling framework for plant-based products, requiring clear distinction between 'vegetarian', 'vegan', and 'plant-based meat analogue'. The framework addresses consumer confusion and sets quality standards for protein content and nutritional claims. Quick-service restaurant chains including McDonald's, Domino's, and Subway have expanded their plant-based menus in India, with plant-based options now accounting for 15% of orders at some outlets.
