National Testing Agency Announces Single Entrance Exam for All Engineering Colleges

National Testing Agency Announces Single Entrance Exam for All Engineering Colleges

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced the introduction of a unified national entrance examination for all engineering colleges in India, including state-level institutions, from the 2027 academic session. The Common Engineering Entrance Test (CEET) will replace the multitude of state-level engineering entrance exams while JEE Main will be restructured to serve as the qualifying round for CEET.

Exam Structure

CEET will be a two-stage examination. Stage 1 (formerly JEE Main) will test foundational concepts in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics through MCQs and will be conducted twice a year. Stage 2 will test advanced problem-solving and conceptual depth, including application-based questions and data interpretation — skills that engineering graduates actually need.

The unique feature of CEET is a 'Practical Aptitude Section' worth 15% of total marks, which will assess spatial reasoning, logical analysis, and design thinking through interactive computer-based problems. This is designed to identify students with natural engineering aptitude beyond textbook knowledge.

"Students currently appear for 8-10 different engineering entrance exams, causing enormous stress and financial burden on families. One well-designed exam is better than a dozen mediocre ones," NTA Director General Subodh Kumar Singh explained at the announcement.

State governments that previously conducted their own exams will receive a share of the CEET scores for their admission processes, with the flexibility to add weightage for state domicile, board exam performance, or other criteria. Most states have welcomed the simplification, though West Bengal and Tamil Nadu have expressed reservations about state autonomy in education. The NTA will conduct trial runs of the new format later this year, with a full implementation timeline spanning 18 months.
