IPL 2026 Mega Auction: Franchises Spend Record Rs 1,200 Crore on Player Pool

IPL 2026 Mega Auction: Franchises Spend Record Rs 1,200 Crore on Player Pool

The IPL 2026 mega auction concluded in Jeddah on Sunday with franchises collectively spending a record Rs 1,202 crore on 204 players. Mumbai Indians emerged as the most aggressive buyers, spending Rs 148 crore of their Rs 155 crore purse, while the newly introduced Guwahati franchise made headlines by securing three marquee international players.

Top Buys and Surprises

Australia's Travis Head became the most expensive buy at Rs 27.5 crore, snapped up by Royal Challengers Bangalore. Indian allrounder Nitish Reddy drew fierce bidding, eventually going to Chennai Super Kings for Rs 24 crore. Uncapped Indian pacer Mayank Yadav, who made a splash last season, was bought by Delhi Capitals for Rs 18 crore, making him the most expensive uncapped player in IPL history.

The auction saw several veterans go unsold in their base price, including former IPL winners Faf du Plessis and Dinesh Karthik. Meanwhile, a record 47 overseas players found buyers, reflecting the continued global appeal of the tournament.

"The auction dynamics have changed completely. Teams now invest heavily in analytics and player tracking. It's more science than gut feeling now," observed former India captain and cricket analyst Sunil Gavaskar.

The new season is scheduled to begin on March 28, with defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders facing Mumbai Indians in the opener at the Wankhede Stadium. The tournament will feature 10 teams playing 74 matches across 14 venues over a two-month window.
